New Ice Age

Russian astronomer Khabibullo Abdusamatov and his colleagues at the Russian Academy of Sciences astronomical observatory, predicts that a period of global cooling will begin within a few years and peak around 2055 to 2060. He and his colleagues have developed this prediction based on measurements of solar emissions. The solar energy reaching the earth is by far the most important factor affecting the earth's temperature.

The Russians predict the new Little Ice Age will be similar to a period in the 16th century when hotels were built on the Baltic Sea ice for travellers crossing the sea in coaches.

Abdusamatov, quoted by the Novosti news agency, said that the global maximum temperature has already been reached and will decline even without the Kyoto protocol. "The Kyoto initiatives to save the planet from the greenhouse effect should be put off until better times," he said.
